For worship on Easter Sunday, I tried to choose songs that would help us prepare for Steve’s message on Colossians 1 while also helping us to reflect on Christ’s death and resurrection and what that means for us.
Your Love Is A Mountain - This song was written based on the letters from Paul and what he has to say about us being the body of Christ. “We are your body, and you are the head. Praise to our savior, who rose from the dead.”
In Christ Alone - This hymn is rich in biblical references and adoration for our Lord because of everything he has done for us. But the most exciting thing about this song on Easter is that from start to finish it gives a recounting of Jesus’ birth, life, death, resurrection and the ultimate salvation that we receive through him. This is a great song to recap what Easter means to the body of Christ.
“‘Till on the cross as Jesus died, The wrath of God was satisfied, For every sin on Him was laid, Here in the death of Christ I live”
Sermon: Colossians 1:15-23
He Never Said A Mumblin’ Word (Arranged by The Welcome Wagon) - This is a wonderful song about the crucifixion and the part that we all played in it. It can’t really stand alone because it doesn’t have a resolution to Jesus on the cross, but we hope to fill in the story with the rest of the songs.
Verse: Matthew 26:59-64
Death In His Grave (John Mark McMillan) - Jesus died in disgrace, but he died for us and he rose again to save us from our own sinfulness that we have been wallowing in since the fall of Adam. “He has cheated hell and seated us above the fall.”
Verse: Matthew 28:5-7
Christ Is Risen (Matt Maher) - CHRIST IS RISEN! There’s not much else that needs to be said about this song. This is a song of rejoicing, and I hope that we properly treated it as such.
My ultimate goal for the final three songs interspersed with verses from Matthew was to give an entire picture of Christ being sentenced to death and ending with the glorious resurrection. I pray that that reflection continued on with you during the rest of your celebration of Easter.

Recap: The songs I chose were the result of trying to select lyrics that highlight the depth of what Jesus did on the cross and how it gives us life as his loved people. The bible gives many commands of how to live life. Interwoven in those same scriptures is a storyline of how God decided to save us by sending His son Jesus to die in our place. However, as a Christian, this story can become just that, a story. These songs state that not only did this happen, but the result is that we get to enjoy new and FULL life. I long to live life with a driving motivation to love Jesus and my neighbors. The key to this is enjoying what Jesus has done for me on the cross. He gives life.

Song: My Eyes Have Seen by Nick Dotson
“Jesus, you have come to see this story through and send me to tell of your death and resurrection, and so I sing, for what you give is all I’ll ever need. So teach me to die, that your Spirit may live in me.”
Song: How He Loves by John Mark McMillan
Watch John Mark McMillan share the story behind this song here.
This song is meant to change the posture of our worship, helping us to recognize that even in our deepest sin, Christ’s hurricane of love is still beating down on us from every side. It is this gracious, lovely irony that changes our repentance from fear to love, we cry out to a God who’s passion for us lead him to die on a cross. Oh how he loves!
